Those and 159 other new laws take effect Wednesday, the start of the state’s fiscal year 2009-2010. Here’s a peek at some of the changes made by the Legislature and Gov. Charlie Crist that go into force on July 1:

7 Smart Career Tactics

June 21st, 2009 RanDrake No comments

One of the keys to a successful career is making the right decisions at critical junctures, whether you’re fielding a job offer, asking for a promotion or plotting your next move.

Beyond those major decisions, every day presents myriad, small opportunities to make good — and bad — choices that could have a big impact.

In an uncertain economy, knowing how to proceed at these junctures becomes even more critical, according to Arizona-based business and workplace consultants Jamie and Maren Showkeir, co-authors of “Authentic Conversations.”

Here are seven tactics to help keep your career on track.

1. Don’t play the blame game.
2. Skip the gossip and get down to work.
3. Get the real story.
4. Don’t play the victim.
5. Think big picture.
6. Be a listener, not a talker.
7. You gotta have hope.

The Pre-Launch Abort Ritual

June 20th, 2009 RanDrake 1 comment

A couple of weeks ago I was on a bus tour of the space shuttle launch area at the Kennedy Space Center Florida. For $58 you can ride a bus past some of the outlying security barriers and get within about a mile of the Discovery on the pad. This is about as close as an ordinary citizen can get without being asked serious questions by men with automatic weapons.

It was an impressive tour in all respects, but this story today brought back a part of the tour related by the guide: NASA Delays Discovery Launch Fourth Time

An all-day review of the craft’s readiness for launch left managers still under-confident about the operations of three hydrogen control valves that channel gaseous hydrogen from the main engines to the external fuel tank. Engineering teams have been working to identify what caused damage to a flow control valve on shuttle Endeavour during its November 2008 flight. NASA managers decided Friday more data and possible testing are required before launch can proceed.

Earlier this year (2009), O’Neal presented its new Element Fastrack motorbike helmet and if the customer reviews are any indication, the market seems to have literally fallen in love with it. So just what is it about the Element Fastrack helmet that’s got the market so excited?

First let’s look at the basics of the Fastrack helmet. The Fastrack is a full face street bike helmet that comes in basic black (gloss and flat) as well as 3 selections of multicolored graphic. It has an adjustable full ventilation system for the top of your head so that cooler heads will prevail, and also on the chin bar to keep your breath from fogging up the picture. To keep the wind from coming up under your chin (especially on those cold days), there’s a Velcro chin skirt.

The chin strap is a double D-ring type with a snap enclosure to keep the end of the strap from flopping around. The visor has a quick release system for easy use and the liners are fully removable and washable. And of course, the Fastrack helmet is DOT certified and exceeds DOT standards.
